何が人生を素晴らしいものにするのか？ | What makes a life great?

皆さんも私と同じように、何か素晴らしい夢や偉大な野望を抱いていた時期があったかと思います。もしかしたら今がその真っただ中かもしれません。私が子供のころ、暖かい夏の日に、実家の上空を飛ぶ飛行機をのんびりと見上げていたのをよく覚えています。小型機から軍用ジェット機まで、飛び交う飛行機の型番を見て覚えてしまうほどでした。私は畏敬の念とともに空を見上げながら、目の前に地平線が広がる空を飛ぶ将来の自分の勇敢な姿をよく想像していました。
7歳の頃のチャドに「大きくなったら何になりたい？」と聞いたら、迷わず「パイロット！」と答えるでしょう。でも大きくなるにつれて夢も変わっていきました。プロサッカー選手や、プロのスケートボード選手、カウンセラーだったり、映画監督だったり。私の理想的な将来の夢や野望は移り変わっていきましたが、ひとつだけ変わらなかったのは私はその目標の一つも達成できなかったということです。これは皆さんに伝えておかないといけませんが、私は実はパイロットではありません。実は私が先ほど挙げた夢のどれにもなれませんでした。「失敗だったね」と言う人もいるかもしれない。一時期、私自身もそのように思っていました。
10年近く日本に住んでいるなかで、私は世界中の人々と知り合うことができました。特に東京のような都市では、素晴らしい多様性に囲まれています。人のものの考え方や価値観の違いを多く見てきました。そして、多くの共通点も見てきました。私が見てきた共通点のひとつは、人は、素晴らしさ／偉大さというのを手に入れようと努力しているということです。
おそらくみなさん聞いたことがないかもしれませんが、ジョージ・マロリーという登山家がかつていました。私自身、登山とは全く関係がない本で彼のことが書かれているのを見るまで、彼のことは全然知りませんでした！彼はエベレスト登頂を目指した最初のイギリス遠征隊の一員でした。「なぜ世界最高峰の山に登りたいと思ったんですか？」という質問に、彼はある有名な返事を返しました。「そこにエベレストがあるから。」彼はさらにこう言いました、
「もしあなたが、この山への挑戦に応え、それに立ち向かう何かが人間の中にあること、その闘いは人生そのものが上へ、そして永遠に上へと向かっていく闘いであることを理解できないなら、私たちがなぜ行くのか理解できないだろう。この冒険から得られるのは、ただ純粋な喜びである。そして喜びとは、結局のところ、人生の終着点なのだ。」
ジョージ・マロリーは1924年、37歳のときに、エベレスト登頂を試みる3度目の挑戦の途中で消息を絶ちました。彼の遺体は1999年にようやく発見されることになりました。

では、何が人生を素晴らしいものにするのでしょうか？自分の夢を達成することでしょうか？もしそうだとしたら、私の人生が素晴らしいはずがありません。私はパイロットではありません。たとえ実現しなくても夢にできるだけ近づくことでしょうか？しかし、それがジョージ・マロリーの息子のように、誰かの幸せを犠牲にするものだとしたらどうでしょう？もし偉大さが、私たちが望むもの、仕事、場所を手に入れることによって達成されるのだとしたら--なぜ私たちは皆、「隣の芝生は青い」という言葉の意味を理解できているのでしょうか？ジョージ・マロリーが追い求めていた喜びは、私たちにとってもそこから充実感を得たい、そういうものだと思う。人間は、素晴らしい／偉大だと思えるものから喜びを得ようとします。
私はクリスチャンですが、聖書が、何が本当に永続的な目的、価値、喜びを与えてくれるのかについて沈黙していないことを嬉しく思います。人と知り合い、彼らの情熱や偉大さ／素晴らしさを追求する姿を見ていくにつれ、それはそれぞれ人によって異なるものだと分かりました。偉大であることの意味について、誰もがまったく同じ考えを持っているわけではありません。本当の意味での偉大さとは何かについて、意見が分かれることもあります。イエス様はこのような価値観を人々に理解させるために、このような言葉を残しています。
マタイ6:19
自分のために、地上に宝を蓄えるのはやめなさい。そこでは虫やさびで傷物になり、盗人が壁に穴を開けて盗みます。
イエスのこの知恵のある言葉は、地上のものに究極的な満足や喜びを追い求めることは、株式市場がある日突然暴落するように、一時的なもので非常にもろいものであることを思い起こさせてくれます。人々は財布を盗む。ある日ガンになることもある。山に登る途中で氷で滑落してしまうかもしれない。私たちは、自分たちが生きる世界のもろさに依存しないような喜びの根源を必要としているのです。
イエス様は続けてこのように言います。
マタイ6:20-21
自分のために、天に宝を蓄えなさい。そこでは虫やさびで傷物になることはなく、盗人が壁に穴を開けて盗むこともありません。あなたの宝のあるところ、そこにあなたの心もあるのです。
イエス様が地上に来られ、完全な生涯を送られ、十字架上で死に、3日後によみがえられたことによって、私たちが神様と和解する道を開いてくださいました。イエスは実際に偉大さを成し遂げ、私たちに赦しと罪の赦しを与え、キリストの偉大さは無償の賜物として私たちに与えられています。イエス様についてのこの真理のおかげで、私はたとえパイロットでなくても今日喜びを持つことができます。家に帰ったらメールを置いて、床で子供たちと遊ぶことができるのは、これのおかげなんです。真の永続的な喜びは、私自身、私の能力、私の地上での成果の外からもたらされるのです。
聖書は神様についてこのように大胆に主張している。
詩篇16:11
あなたは私にいのちの道を知らせてくださいます。満ち足りた喜びがあなたの御前にあり楽しみがあなたの右にとこしえにあります。
では、あなたははどうでしょうか？自分の夢や野望の達成に向けて、今どんな状況でしょうか？うまくいっていることを願っています。そして、あなたが自分の能力や業績に依存しないものから、イエス・キリストによる神の完全な愛によって、真の喜びと平安を見出すことを願っています。
If you're like me, there was a time when you had dreams and ambitions of something great. Maybe you do right now. I remember lazily peering up at the sky on warm summer days at the airplanes that flew over the house I grew up in. I did this so often that I learned and remembered the model number of each aircraft that flew by—everything from small planes and military jets. I looked up in the sky with awe and imagined myself bravely soaring the skies one day with only the horizon before me.
If you were to ask the seven-year-old Chad, "What do you want to be when you grow up?" I would have answered without hesitation, "A pilot!" As I grew older the dreams changed: a pro soccer player, a professional skateboarder, a counselor, a filmmaker, and on and on. My dreams and ambitions of what an ideal future for me would include have shifted and changed but one thing has changed the same which is that I never achieved these goals. I suppose I should tell you that I’m not a pilot. In fact, I’m not any of these things that I mentioned. Some might say that I failed. For a time, I did, too.
Being a resident in Japan for almost ten years has allowed me to meet people from all over the world. Especially in a city like Tokyo, you are surrounded by so much wonderful diversity. I've seen so many differences in how people think about things and their values. And yet, I've also seen a lot of similarities. One of the similarities I've seen is that people strive for greatness.
George Mallory was a mountain climber that you probably have never heard of. I didn’t know about him either until I saw him mentioned in a book that wasn't about mountain climbing! He was part of a few of the first British expeditions to climb Mt. Everest. When asked why he wanted to climb the world's highest mountain, he gave a famous answer. He said, "Because it is there." He went further by saying,
"If you cannot understand that there is something in a man which responds to the challenge of this mountain and goes out to meet it, that the struggle is the struggle of life itself upwards and forever upward, then you won't see why we go. What we get from this adventure is just sheer joy. And joy is, after all, the end of life."
George Mallory disappeared on his third attempt to climb Mt. Everest in 1924 when he was 37. His body was finally discovered in 1999.
After his mysterious and tragic disappearance, people started to learn more about Morris' life. In looking at things a little further, we can see that it was more than joy that drove Mallory. These are words he wrote to his wife that shed some light on a more relatable side of this man.
"Dearest...you must know that the spur to do my best is you and you again...I want more than anything to prove worthy of you."
Mallory wanted his wife to remember him—to respect him and he wanted to feel worthy of her. George's son, John, wrote words regarding his father that put the cost of his pursuit of greatness into perspective. He wrote, "I would so much rather have known my father than to have grown up in the shadow of a legend, a hero, as some people perceive him to be."
I am a father to four children. These words from George Mallory's son made me stop and think. It may make you pause and think, too.
So, what makes a life great? Is it accomplishing our dreams? If it is, then my life can not be great. I'm not a pilot. Is it getting as close as possible to a dream, even if we don't realize it? But what if that comes at the cost of someone else's happiness, like George Mallory's son? If greatness is achieved by getting the thing, the job, the place, that we want--then why do we all understand the meaning of the phrase, "The grass is always greener on the other side?" I think the joy that George Mallory was after is something that we also want to find fulfillment from. Human beings seek after joy from things that seem great.
I am a Christian and I am glad the Bible isn't silent about what truly gives us lasting purpose, value, and joy. As I’ve gotten to know people and learned about their passions and pursuits of greatness, it’s generally varied from person to person. Not everyone has the exact same idea of what it means to be great. We can even disagree on what greatness truly is. Jesus had this to say when he was helping people to understand these sorts of values.
Matthew 6:19
"Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal,"
Jesus wisely brings to mind that the pursuit of ultimate satisfaction and joy with things on earth is temporary and highly fragile—stock markets crash. People steal wallets. Cancer strikes. We might slip on the ice trying to climb a mountain. We need a source of joy that is not dependent on the fragility of the world that we live in.
Jesus continued by saying,
Matthew 6:20-21
"but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also."
Jesus made a way for us to be reconciled to God by coming to earth, living a perfect life, dying on the cross, and resurrecting three days later. Jesus actually achieved greatness and offers us forgiveness and the forgiveness of our sins, and Christ’s greatness is bestowed to us as a free gift. Because of this truth about Jesus, I can have joy today even though I'm not a pilot. It's the reason I can put down my email when I get home and get on the floor to play with my kids. True and lasting joy comes from something outside me, my abilities, and my earthly accomplishments.
The Bible makes this bold claim about God that I have found true.
Psalm 16:11
You make known to me the path of life; in your presence there is fullness of joy; at your right hand are pleasures forevermore.
So, what about you? How have things gone in the accomplishment of your dreams and ambitions? I hope they are going well. I also hope that you find true joy and peace from something that is not dependent on your abilities or accomplishments, by God's perfect love through Jesus Christ.
