(English Below)
Let’s think about this question: Does God Exist? Someone asks, “What do you mean by ‘God’—is it a small territorial god like in mythologies or the force in Star Wars? What we are asking is, “Does a higher being exist who created this world and is the judge over his creatures like us?” As we start this series, I want to make it clear that I do not think that people who wrestle with these questions are my enemies. I myself, a Christian pastor, have wrestled with these questions both casually and in moments of deep, agonizing distress. I did not simply receive the truth about God from my parents or a Christian culture without struggle. So, if you struggle to believe, you are not my opponent in a debate, you are someone whom I hope to help in the same ways I have been helped. Ultimately, as Hebrews 12 says, Jesus is the founder of our faith.
Before we try to answer this question, it’s very important to get some of our terms right and I encourage you to use the word bank below:
Atheist - Someone who believes there is no God.
Agnostic - Someone who believes that the truth about God is not knowable.
Deist - Someone who believes that a God exists but that God is silent and does not reveal himself to humanity.
Theist - Someone who believes in one or many gods.
Polytheist - believe in many gods like Shintoism and Hinduism and Greek and Roman mythologies teach.
Monotheist - believe in one God and this mainly consists of the three religions that have a common father in Abraham; Judaism first, Christianity second and lastly Islam.
Christian - You are at a Christian church worship gathering and Christians believe there is one God who is revealed through the Bible and Jesus Christ, the son of God.
Before we look at these views and try to argue for mono-theism and Christianity, let’s acknowledge that some might think, “It doesn’t matter because I don’t need God.” However, if the Creator-God exists, then we all must have a right relationship with God. Harmony with God should be pursued. If God does not exist, then people should live however they want and live like atheists.
However, I personally have not seen many true atheists. Meaning, I’ve encountered people in life and in the media who claim there is no God but who do not live consistently with that belief. For instance…
When tragedies happen, suddenly everyone who claims to be an atheist, starts to believe in prayer. They say, “Pray for Israel, pray for Ukraine, pray for Japan, pray for Tohoku.” I pray and think it’s important, but if you’re an atheist, to whom do you pray and how would it be effective?
When someone dies, people are quick to say, “Well, they are looking down at you from heaven. They are at peace and have gone to a better world.” A true atheist believes that we do not have souls, there is no afterlife, and when we die our brain cells stop functioning and there is nothing else. Further, atheists believe that in 10 billion years, the sun will die and in 100 trillion years, the last star will die and eventually time becomes meaningless and nothing will exist forever. True nothingness and meaninglessness is the future of true atheism.
Some will speak of having a true self beyond their physical body and they want to get in touch with that true self. However, a true atheist should say, “I am only cells and molecules and there is not a true me or soul that exists beyond my physical body.” As a Christian, I believe you are more than just your physical body and that you have a soul that is of great importance.
Further, most who claim to be atheists live by certain moral standards and believe that certain things are right and wrong. But, if we are all simple cells formed into animals, these laws and morals should not exist.
So, let me ask a new big question: Why are there so few true atheists? Answer: God made humans in his image with the ability to perceive the existence of their Creator. Here is the Apostle Paul writing in the New Testament book of Romans 1:18-20 to support this idea.
18 For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth. 19 For what can be known about God is plain to them, because God has shown it to them. 20 For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse.
For most people, the idea that God exists is not something they encounter for the first time in a church. Through the world around you, you have been told many times, “There’s a creator.” From trees, bees, strawberries, stars, whales, and a baby’s toes you have been told that there is a designer. This is the first argument for the existence of God…
1) The complex universe is finely tuned in a way that leads us to believe in a Creator.
This has been said in many ways but imagine you walk in the woods and find a perfectly working wristwatch. You would not assume that a tornado came through the area and fashioned and picked-up the pieces of metal, glass, leather, etc and assembled them into a working watch. You’d assume it was designed and made by an intelligent designer.
There are some Bible-believing Christians who believe that God created everything in six days and there are some Bible-believing Christians who believe that God started and guided and used the processes of evolution to create the world and the universe. Both believe that God is the designer, creator, and genius who made everything from nothing so we are not attaching either of those views which are both held by people in this church. What we are attacking is the atheistic view that the natural world is all there is and there was not a Creator of this universe.
In that view, everything exists as a result of random chance and will one day cease to exist naturally. Looking at this beautifully complex world and believing it all came together randomly is a great leap of faith made by atheists.
If we look at all the systems in the human eye that have to work with the human brain to produce sight, it is very difficult to believe that they are the result of random chance in the universe. We live on a planet with water, just the right amount of oxygen, just the right size, with just the right sized moon for everything to support life. We live just the right distance from the sun, and spin at just the right speed and are near Jupiter so that asteroids are sucked into its massive gravitational pull rather than into Japan. 3,000 years ago, King David of Israel wrote…
Psalm 19:1
The heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky above proclaims his handiwork.
The fact that the universe exists at all is a miracle. Scientists have said that the four major forces (Gravity, electro magnetic, strong nuclear, and weak nuclear) were formed immediately after the Big Bang. However, if any of them were to be off by a fraction, the universe could not exist. It’s been said that the likelihood that each force would have emerged at their exact levels of strength is the same likelihood of flipping a coin and getting it to land on heads 10,000,000,000,000,000,000 (quintillion) times in a row.
Atheist Christopher Hitchens admitted that the argument for God on the basis of design and the fine-tuning in the universe is the strongest argument against atheism. That’s the first argument. Here’s the second argument…
2) Because moral values exist, we are led to believe that a moral God exists.
When we see racism and crimes against people on the news, we immediately feel, “That’s not right!” People immediately felt, “Russia can’t invade Ukraine” or “Hamas should not attack Israel.” However, if there is no God, then an atheistic view should tell us that all of these things are simply the survival of the fittest. If there is no God who is a judge, then there is nothing wrong with strong people oppressing the weak and humans exploiting and abusing other humans, animals, or the planet. If someone insists that such a thing as justice exists, then we have to ask, “What standard of justice and where did that standard come from?” The Bible gives answers in Romans 2:15:
They show that the work of the law is written on their hearts, while their conscience also bears witness, and their conflicting thoughts accuse or even excuse them.
God’s laws that he put into his world are written on our hearts. The first book of the Bible, Genesis, says God made humans in his image and because God is moral that means we are moral as well.
You might say, “I know people who deny the existence of morality.” Romans 1:18 says that they do this by suppressing the truth. There have been times in history when people tried to suppress the truth about God and God’s laws. But, this suppression of the truth about God and his law takes sinful effort. In the 1960’s there was a free love movement in the USA, in the 1800’s many in France tried to throw off God and morality after the French Revolution and in the 1860’s in Tokyo the “Ee Janai Ka” movement saw looting and lewd acts in the street. But, all of these movements required effort for people to suppress the truth about morality and they did not last. Today, a great deal of effort from commerce, entertainment, tech companies, sports, and politics is expended to suppress the truth about God’s creation of humans as male and female.
Though people tried to insist that everything is morally relative in the recent past, the last 5-10 years have shown that people’s sense of moral right and wrong is very strong. The feeling that ethnic minorities shouldn’t be oppressed and that women shouldn’t be abused and that the poor should be helped is strong in our world because we are made in the image of a moral God.
If I asked you, “Have you been wronged?” Most would say “yes.” If I asked if you have done something wrong or ever felt guilt or shame, most would say, “yes.” Morality is objectively true, but you have also had a subjective experience of feeling moral absolutes so once again, this is not the first time you’re experiencing this idea.
My third point for the existence of God is VERY subjective.
3) Because we intuit a spiritual realm, it leads us to believe in a spiritual God who made us as spiritual beings.
I’m not going to use evidence for this point but simply ask you if you have felt that you have a soul. Here we are in this world, existing and thinking. But, further, we are thinking about thinking about existence. Now we are talking about thinking about thinking about existing. Further, you are feeling emotions about thinking about thinking about existing.
You are not the result of random chance. You are a complex being with emotions, ideas, and personhood that is more than just a collection of cells. You were created by a loving God. You have value. You have purpose. Your emotions matter to the creator. The Bible says in Ecclesiastes 3:11
He (God) has made everything appropriate in its time. He has also put eternity in their hearts, but no one can discover the work God has done from beginning to end. (CSV)
God placed eternity and the sense of something bigger and transcendent in human hearts. You can sense there is more to life and death. It seems Steve Jobs (not a Christian) experienced what the Bible talks about before he died.
“Sometimes I believe in God, sometimes I don’t. I think it’s 50-50 maybe. But ever since I’ve had cancer, I’ve been thinking about it more. And I find myself believing a bit more. I kind of – maybe it’s ’cause I want to believe in an afterlife. That when you die, it doesn’t just all disappear. The wisdom you’ve accumulated. Somehow it lives on, but sometimes I think it’s just like an on-off switch. Click and you’re gone.”
I imagine that many of you too have sensed that you have a soul that lives past death and have had an urge to pray to something or someone. You are sensing your Creator who has placed eternity in your heart.
Someone might say, “Well, I can believe that maybe there is a Creator or higher being—I’ve moved from Atheist or Agnostic to Deist or even Theist. But, I’m not at all convinced that the one true creator who is responsible for the creation of the four forces and stars and atoms is Jesus Christ of Nazareth.” I understand that way of thinking and I think my last point is very important for you.
4) The one true Creator God came into our world to reveal himself to us
What if our creator wanted us to know him so much that he went to efforts in history to make himself known to us? This is what the Bible teaches in Hebrews 1:1-3.
1 Long ago, at many times and in many ways, God spoke to our fathers by the prophets,2 but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed the heir of all things, through whom also he created the world. 3 He is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature, and he upholds the universe by the word of his power. After making purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high,
God spoke through prophets to tell us about himself and we have this recorded in the Old Testament, the Jewish Bible. Then, God the Son came as a man named Jesus. When the Creator came to live among us, what did he do as the greatest show of his glory and majesty and brilliance? He died on a cross. The most unthinkable thing is actually the most amazing thing. As verse 3 says, Jesus made purification for sins by his death on a cross. He rose to life and returned to heaven and offers forgiveness and eternal life to all who have faith in him.
Why? Why would God die for people who sinned and broke the moral laws God put into the universe? Because God loves you. John 3:16
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.
God made a brilliant world for us to live in. God has laws. We broke his laws. He died to pay the penalty for our sins. He rose. He wants you to know him and is available for prayer and worship and relationship. Not only does God exist but he is good and knowing him is true life.
We’ve talked about reasons to believe that God’s existence is true but could I now ask you to consider if it’s not only true but also beautiful? Which story is more beautiful—the story that you came by accident, have no soul, will die and become nothing in a universe that will become nothing? Or, the story that God made you, you have a soul, you have value, you are loved even to the point of a painful death, and that God will renew the world to last forever?
